Past Perfect Continuous Quá Khứ Hoàn Thành Tiếp Diễn

Thì Past Perfect Continuous hay còn gọi là Quá Khứ Hoàn Thành Tiếp Diễn là một trong những thì (tense) khó nhất. Đọc thôi hẳn các ban cũng thấy nó… dễ gây lẹo lưỡi rồi đúng không? Thật ra thì điểm ngữ pháp này ứng dụng không nhiều. Thực sự luôn là trong bấy nhiêu năm học tiếng Anh. Thầy dùng nó trong Reported Speech là nhiều. Ngoài ra chẳng thấy nó được sử dụng. Tuy nhiên, 12 thì tiếng Anh sẽ không thể tròn vẹn nếu chúng ta bỏ qua điểm ngữ pháp này. Trong bài viết này, chúng ta sẽ khám phá về thì Past Perfect về:

FORMATION

Subject + Had been +V-ing

I had been living in that house.
We had been living in that house.
They had been living in that house.

She had been living in that house.
He had been living in that house.
It had been living in that house.

That dog had been living in that house.
These dogs had been living in that house.

USES

1. Something that started in the past and continued up to another action or time in the past.
   Một hành động bắt đầu trong quá khứ và tiếp diễn đến một mốc thời gian nào đó trong quá khứ (chưa tới hiện tại nha)
   • They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived.
   • She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business.
   • How long had you been waiting to get on the bus?
2. To tell a Cause of something in the past
   Dùng để giải thích một kết quả ở quá khứ
   • Jason was tired because he had been jogging.
   • Sam gained weight because he had been overeating.
   • Betty failed the final test because she had not been attending class.

1. I have had seen him since we moved here.
2. Nobody had been attacking the tower for three years.
3. The guys found out the truth before she had.
4. He said that he was talking before the man had come.
5. Nobody knew that she had been work in this company since she moved here.

Put these verbs in brackets into its correct forms of tenses

1. I (look) out before I (go) to bed and (see) a man standing on the opposite pavement watching the house.
2. When I (get up) the following morning he (be) still there, and I (wonder) whether he (stay) there all night or if he (go) away and (come) back.
3. When I (open) the door I (see) a man on his knees.
4. He clearly (listen) to our conversation and I (wonder) how much he (hear).
5. When I (ask) him what he (do), he (say) that he (drop) a 50p piece outside the door and (look) for it.
6. I (not see) any sign of the money, but I (find) a small notebook and pencil which he probably (drop) when the door (open) suddenly. So he (take) notes of our conversation!
7. The notes (be) written in a foreign language, so I (turn) to the stranger and (ask) him to translate.
8. But he (pull) my hat over my eyes and (run) off down the corridor. By the time I (recover) from the shock he (disappear) round the corner.
9. Curiously enough, when I (move) my foot I (find) that I (stand) on a 50p piece. 45 Perhaps he (tell) the truth after all!
