Abnegation – Formal Word

Hi, this is the second video in the series of Project Fancy helping you to learn academic words for IELTS or formal situations that require this kind of vocabulary. Today’s word is a noun, an uncountable noun to be exact, ABNEGATION.

First and foremost, let’s start with its

Pronunciation

Except for the Accent, basically the pronunciation of the word is the same for both American and British English. The video is already entailed with the sound (not mine alone, no worries), and hence you can listen for reference. But if you like, you can visit this website to have a look at ABNEGATION’s pronunciation.

As regards the meaning of Abnegation,

this formal noun has two major meanings. Although the most prevalent meaning is “when you do not allow yourself to have or do something”, it can be used with positive or negative thought.

It would be negative

if you use to indicate the time you should have done something but refused:

  • Abnegation of responsibility can lead to chaos. +
  • his abnegation of collective agreement seems unreasonable to me.

But it could be positive

when you reject something you like (because of something else):

  • Women in Vietnam are still expected to live their lives in complete abnegation of themselves.
  • Nobody can ever understand how great his abnegation of his own love.

Now then, where can we use abnegation?

This can be used in IELTS Writing Task 2,

such as when we have to discuss about “Women’s Right”. You can start by writing:

Many a married woman in Vietnam is still conventionally expected to live in abnegation of their own hobbies whilst men are not.

See how this sentence can be a perfect hook in an introduction? Heh heh! 2

Or you can utilize the word in IELTS Speaking Part 3

Try to answer these questions:

a) How do you think the role of Vietnamese Women has changed in recent years?

b) Do you agree that children should start studying at the age of 5?

c) Is it necessary for young people to have a period of time to do nothing bu experiencing before continuing to study or work?

Right, that’s everything I think necessary. Now try to make as many examples using the word as possible to remember! And good day!
