The word AFFLUENT is practically a formal word for RICH! Replacing the word “rich” with “affluent” in formal and academic situations such as in the IELTS test or in formal meeting would be appropriate.
The pronunciation of AFFLUENT

The meaning of Affluent,
as I mentioned, is simply:
“ having plenty of money, nice houses, expensive things etc “
You can find its meaning equal to that of RICH or WEALTH.
They say that the pack reached only the more affluent areas where house prices averaged £150,000.
I had been guilty of this when my children were small in the early 1960s and living the affluent life.
We can apply AFFLUENT in the IELTS test just whenever you want to use RICH, replace it by AFFLUENT. In case you want it to be more formal, try to utilize its noun “AFFLUENCE”!
